If you have landed here, the chances are one of two things happened. Either the renewal quote arrived and the per-seat maths stopped being funny, or you are setting up on-call for the first time, saw the pricing page, and wondered whether a five-person team really needs the tool that Fortune 500 SRE organisations run on. Both are fair questions. This post tries to answer them honestly, including the parts where PagerDuty is the better choice.

First, what PagerDuty actually is

PagerDuty is an incident response platform. It receives events, applies routing rules, consults an on-call schedule, pages the right person, escalates if nobody acknowledges, and gives you the analytics afterwards. It is genuinely very good at this, it has been doing it for over a decade, and the escalation logic is battle-tested in a way that newer tools are not.

What it is not is a monitoring tool. PagerDuty does not check whether your server is up, watch your disk fill, notice a suspicious process, or tell you a certificate expires on Thursday. Something else has to detect the problem and hand it over.

That distinction is the whole story for a small team. Adopting PagerDuty means you are buying the routing layer and still paying for the detection layer separately, whether that is a monitoring SaaS, a self-hosted Prometheus stack that somebody has to maintain, or both.

The pricing shape, not just the number

As of 2026, PagerDuty’s Professional plan runs about $21 per user per month billed annually, and Business about $41 per user per month. Month-to-month is more. Several things you might assume are included - analytics, status pages, live call routing, AIOps event intelligence - are add-ons priced on top of the seat cost.

The number matters less than the shape. Per-seat pricing means your on-call bill grows every time you hire, even though the alert volume, the number of servers, and the amount of work being done by the tool have not changed. For a 40-person engineering org that is a reasonable way to price. For a team of five where three people share the rotation, you are paying by headcount for something whose cost to serve is driven by infrastructure.

And it is the second bill that catches people out. The seat cost is the visible one. The monitoring underneath it - the SaaS subscription, or the engineer-hours keeping a DIY Prometheus and Alertmanager stack fed - is the one that quietly costs more. Setting up monitoring properly takes several tools, each needing its own code and config, and once it breaks you effectively need somebody whose job is managing the monitoring. That is not a good use of a five-person team.

When PagerDuty is the right answer

Be honest with yourself about these, because switching to save money and then discovering a gap at 3 AM is a bad trade:

  • You need voice calls in the escalation chain. A phone that rings through Do Not Disturb is a real capability, and if your escalation policy depends on it, that narrows the field considerably.
  • You have a large integration surface. PagerDuty has several hundred native integrations. If you need deep two-way sync with a specific ITSM or ticketing system, check that before anything else.
  • You are at enterprise scale. Service dependency mapping, stakeholder communications, postmortem workflows, and advanced analytics across hundreds of services are things PagerDuty does properly and most alternatives approximate.
  • Compliance or procurement mandates it. Sometimes the answer is decided above your pay grade.

If two or more of those apply, stay. The rest of this post will not change your mind, and it should not.

Where AlertKick fits

Pricing is flat, not per seat. Free covers 10 uptime monitors and heartbeats at 5-minute checks, and commercial use is explicitly allowed. Professional is £39 a month for 5 hosts with eBPF security included, 20 checks every minute, and 30-day retention. Business is £149 a month for 25 hosts, 100 checks, 90-day retention, and compliance evidence and reports. Adding a sixth person to the rotation costs nothing on any of them.

The honest limits

  • No voice calls. Escalation ends at SMS. For most small teams a text at 3 AM does the job, but if you specifically need a robocall that overrides silent mode, AlertKick does not have it.
  • A much smaller integration catalogue. Custom webhooks bridge most gaps, but “most” is doing work in that sentence. Check your specific tools.
  • Less mature incident tooling. No service dependency graphs, no stakeholder communication workflows, no analytics suite of PagerDuty’s depth.

Working out whether it is worth it

  3. Check that list against the limits above. Voice calls are the usual dealbreaker; find out early.

  6. Run both in parallel for a couple of weeks before you cancel anything.
